SUBJECT: eth0 - Link not valid, my personal hell!

I have a newish style (50000 series, IR port built in) Playstation 2. I just had the kit delivered today, but I can't get eth0 to work!

I've read on here about having to update smap.o but I can't transfer it to my playstation. The eth0 always say link not valid so I can't http/ftp the file (i've tried DHCP and manual).
Also, I burnt a cd to transfer the file and all i get is an "illegal media" error!
I saw one person recommending to get a friend to put the file on a PS2 memory card, but I don't know anyone else with PS2 linux. :(

I'm feeling really ripped off at the moment, any help would be greatly appreciated!
