Can you use your network adapter ok with games?
Are you sure your network cable works okay?
Can you try using this alternative smap driver?

Try copying it onto a USB stick and using the usb-storage module to mount the USB stick and copy the driver to your PS2.

You must do these operations as the root user - I often see the errors you're describing when I forget to log in as root first.
