Summary:Pre-orders

There are still pre-order units available from our e-commerce site at http://www.us.playstation.com/product_detail/product_detail.jhtml?PRODID=337933&CATID=490&refUrl=linux of the first manufacturing run for an estimated shipping date of May 22nd. We need to understand the demand so that we know how many units to manufacture since there is a 2 month or more lead time for manufacturing and international shipping. This means that if we get a sudden spike of interest on May 22nd when the first batch arrives and we have not correctly predicted the demand, then there may be a delay before the next batch can be shipped. So, if you are interested in buying a kit, please help us out and pre-order now. Please note that your credit card will not be charged until your kit is ready to ship.

SCEA Announce release of LINUX KIT (for PlayStation 2)
For Linux Community in Australia

Sydney - April 29, 2002 - Sony Computer Entertainment

Australia (SCEA) has announced it will release the Linux Kit (for PlayStationâ2) on 27th May 2002. The kit is targeted towards the Australian Linux community and will retail for $499.95 including GST and shipping Australia wide.

Since the launch of PlayStation 2, Sony Computer
Entertainment (SCE) has received numerous requests from members of the Linux community to enable Linux programs
to run on PlayStation 2. In response to these requests, the Linux Beta Version Kit was made available to approximately 7,900 enthusiasts in Japan in July 2001. Worldwide requests for the Linux kit to be made available outside Japan have
continued, and over 11,000 Linux users responded to an
SCE online questionnaire saying that they would buy the kit if it were available. In response to this movement, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia will now release Linux (for PlaySation2) to support the Linux user community.

The Linux Kit (for PlayStation 2) comprises an internal 40 Gb Hard Disk Drive, a high-speed Network Adapter (10/100 BASE-T Ethernet), two Linux instalment discs (DVD-ROM), USB Mouse and Keyboard and a Monitor Cable Adaptor, with audio connectors, for display on computer monitors. A high-resolution computer display is assumed as the graphics output; standard output being XGA (1024 x 768 dots).
With this kit, users can not only run a wide variety of computer applications written for the Linux operating system, but can also create original programs and applications designed to run on Linux (for PlayStation 2).

A limited number of Linux (for PlayStation 2) units will be available to Australian consumers initially. To register an expression of interest call NCSS on 1300 365 911 or email ps2linux_au@scee.net. Once the kits have arrived (after Ma
y 27, 2002) you will be contacted to confirm your order and to process payment by 27, 2002) you will be contacted to confirm your order and to process payment by Visa, Mastercard or Bankcard.

More details on the product, together with community based features, images and customer service details are available on SCEE's technology site (http://www.technology.scee.net). A Linux for PlayStation 2 community website (www.playstation
2-linux.com) offers a place to interact with other users, a guide to the most frequently asked questions and the opportunity to host software and documentation projects.

With PlayStation 2, Sony Computer Entertainment will create and develop a new world of computer entertainment for the broadband era through the fusion of games, music, movies, broadcasting and publishing in Australia.
