SUBJECT: Connecting PS2 To PC

Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong place but due to my relative inexperience and basic nature of the questions I felt it should probably go in the New User bit...

At the moment I'm needing to transfer CPP files onto the PS2 to work on a resit. However, the problem is that basically I have squat-all knowledge of networking anything. At the moment I have Linux installed and have an IP value for it, it's connected by cable to the pc I'm hoping to work from.
First Question: Do I need a router? Or is it possible to connect the two in the simplistic way that I described?

After that I have Samba and Putty downloaded and unzipped on my pc. I've used both the programmes previously but have not set them up so any pointers would be appreciated, although Putty seems easy enough.

As you can see, the FAQ's and Newbie Guides weren't Newbie enough for me. :)

Cheers.

K'
